Will Preity be the queen who won over the Knights?

Dubai: High drama has always been part and parcel of the Indian Premier League (IPL) final. With both finalists Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab being owned by two top Bollywood names in Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta, there will be no dearth of emotional scenes this time around.

The camera is sure to constantly pan on Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan, the King of Bollywood, and Punjab's co-owner Preity Zinta. The action in the middle will be backed by off-field dramas from these two stars who have won the hearts of millions of film lovers. Their smiles and sorrows during the match will add to the excitement of the final.

Khan, who courted trouble at the Wankhede Stadium during the 2012 edition following a skirmish with the security staff and officials, may have to keep his emotions under control. Zinta, on the other hand, had won the hearts of millions of fans through her infectious smile and was seen shedding tears of joy after her teams win over Chennai on Friday.

Bollywood drama has been often about the hero winning over the heroine or vice versa but both battling for a trophy is quite an unique situation.

Bollywood quotient to spice up the final

For many a Bollywood fan, the Indian Premier League final between Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab will rekindle memories of the 2004 Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta film Veer Zaara. Some are calling Sunday's contest a 'Bollywood final'.

If you like love stories, you will never want to miss this year's Indian Premier League final. This time, apart from being Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan's Kolkata Knight Riders versus glam doll Preity Zinta's Kings XI Punjab, the IPL final is also making headlines as the immortalised Veer vs Zaara. What's more? The Veer vs Zaara hashtag is already trending on Twitter and is being used by Twitteratis very frequently along with every IPL talk.

Shah Rukh, whose resurgent Kolkata team will take on Preity's high-flying Punjab in Sunday's final at Bangalore's Chinnaswamy Stadium, became known by his character of Veer soon after he and Zinta starred in an award-winning 2004 Bollywood film called Veer Zaara, featuring the latter as Zaara. (Pics:The Knight of Knights and the Queen of Kings)

The movie, which is based on Squadron Leader Veer Pratap Singh (Shah Rukh) going to Pakistan to meet his love interest Zaraa Khan (Preity Zinta), takes an unexpected turn when Veer is implicated as a RAW agent and ends up spending 22 years in prison.

Shah Rukh was overjoyed when KKR earned a spot in the IPL 2014 final after beating Kings XI Punjab by 28 runs in the first qualifier. The tournament is one of the most popular sporting events not just in India but across the world.

Shah Rukh's Kolkata Knight Riders have already won the IPL title in 2012. Having won eight games in-a-row this year, the Knights have been unstoppable with Yusuf Pathan getting back to his best and Sunil Narine ruling the roost among the bowlers.

Kings XI Punjab, on the other hand, are in the form of their life with Glenn Maxwell hitting bowlers out of the park on almost every ball with his fancy reverse sweeps and scoops. South African star David Miller and Aussie skipper George Bailey have added muscle to the team with their T20 skills.

However, for many Bollywood fans in India, the final will center around Shah Rukh vs Preity Zinta or Veer vs Zaara. Some are also calling it a 'Bollywood final'.

Shah Rukh Khan was on seventh heaven as his team, Kolkata Knight Riders, won the Qualifier 1 match at the Eden Gardens.

Shah Rukh Khan's Kolkata Knight Riders steamrolled Preity Zinta's Kings XI Punjab in the Qualifier 1 match of the seventh edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) to enter the finals.

Leading from the front, team owner Shah Rukh Khan went for the victory lap with the knights, as fans went wild with slogans of "Shah Rukh Khan, Shah Rukh Khan".

The teammates hugged each other and thumped skipper Gautam Gambhir while a few fans spilled onto the ground.

Numbering in tens of thousands, they roared the anthem of Kolkata Knight Riders - Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo Re as Shah Rukh Khan waved to them, and threw kisses. Dressed in a white and purple t-shirt and blue denims, the superstar looked exuberant after the powerful performance of his team.

Gautam Gambhir admitted he would have loved to chase a total against Punjab but when KingsXI Punjab skipper George Bailey inserted Kolkata Knight Riders to bat first, he was up for it. "We knew we had plenty of good batsmen in our ranks who can post a decent total. In the end, the batsmen did perform their responsibilities brilliantly," said Gambhir.

"I wasn't thinking too much about my comeback to the Indian team. I was focused on this match because it was a very important game for us and a lot was at stake. It is very important for a sportsman to stay in the present." Gautam Gambhir said after the win against Kings XI Punjab.

Shah Rukh Khan later told reporters: "I am grateful to Kolkata for its support and we will party after we win the IPL this year. The team has been playing fantastically."

Here's wishing Shah Rukh Khan and Kolkata Knight Riders all the best for the finale.

during a telling moment in the chat, Gauri Khan finally allowed diplomacy to take a back seat and admitted her latest venture was a choice she made for herself.

“Being a wife, a mother to young baby, a film producer all appear to be time consuming things under the media glare, but really it isn’t,” she confessed. “You can’t just take care of your husband all day or look after your baby. There comes a time you need to do something for yourself, for your own identity. The Design Cell and now The First Ferry is for me.”

The Bollywood star wife to superstar Shah Rukh Khan was in Dubai on Wednesday on a whirlwind 10-hour trip to launch her Gauri Khan line with interiors and design company, The First Ferry, which is based out of Dubai, with offices in London and Singapore.

Gauri, who celebrated the first birthday of her son AbRam a day earlier, was all smiles about her latest venture, admitting that aside from her latest partnership, she was also in talks to branch out her interiors store, The Design Cell, to Dubai in the distant future.

“I have been approached by several people to bring The Design Cell to Dubai in the near future and it is a possibility, but right now, I am bringing my own brand of ‘sparkle’ to the city with this venture, and not just limited it to homes, but also hotels, spas, offices or any design space that could be worked with,” she revealed.

Quizzed whether Gauri would be playing a role in designing the interiors of her husband Shah Rukh’s real estate venture that has been launched once again in Ras Al Khaimah, according to sources, and she said: “No, I am not working on Shah Rukh Khan Boulevard. There are projects in Dubai that are currently under discussion but nothing that can be revealed as yet.”

Over the years, Gauri has designed the interiors of her homes in Mumbai and Dubai, before venturing into a business partnership with Hrithik Roshan’s estranged wife Suzanne Roshan where they have been responsible for designing the interiors of several star homes in Bollywood.
The star duo was also in Dubai in March to preview their joint venture in designing the interiors of a villa project in Goa.

Ask whether taking on such public projects becomes daunting and she replied: “Well, the interiors I design does not have to be an entire hotel for example; I could just add my stamp and bring a little bling to the lobby or the spa. My creativity would tie the whole project together in this one central space.”

Earlier this year, the star wife decided to open her own interiors store in Mumbai, giving rise to The Design Cell, which ranges from antiques picked in Paris to rustic artworks sourced in New York.

“My favourite place to uncover a treasure trove of trinkets is Paris,” she confessed, adding: “But there is no particular style statement that I try to make with my purchases.

“Styles are so fluid, forever changing, that as a designer, you have to keep learning and keep growing your tastes, along with catering to the needs of your client.”

Probe further and she says: “The personal style in my homes leans more towards understated elegance.”

What design tips would she give a novice then who doesn’t want to blow a budget but wants to remain house proud?

Said Gauri: “Keep it clean for starters. I have been to people’s homes that are messy, cluttered. That is no excuse. When you have people over, you need to respect them enough to invite them into a clean environment.”

That may be difficult for families with young children all the time one would say, but Gauri responded: “I am not saying be a freak and keep everything with military precision. I am a mother with a young boy and I am not telling people to give this makeover to their bedroom, but a space that is devoid of a mess and well maintained. That is the key.”

Gauri also admitted that in the new few years, she is willing to explore her creativity, possibly branching into designing bags or jewellery some day.

“It is liberating in many ways, so who knows what the future brings,” she said.

Shah Rukh Khan stepped into the Eden green and jumped onto Yusuf Pathan moments after the Knights blazed into the IPL final. Legs around Pathan’s waist, Shah Rukh threw himself backwards in joy and kept falling until someone extended a hand and broke the fall. In one swift move, he was back straight. The Shah Rukh show had just begun. Pictures by Rashbehari Das

Calcutta, May 28: As a Don, Shah Rukh Khan has pulled off what would be impossible for lesser men.

In his avatar as principal owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Shah Rukh has seen his franchise put him in the shade!

One just can’t put it any other way.

An absolutely incredible three weeks have seen KKR, astutely captained by the intense Gautam Gambhir, chalk up a record-creating eight wins in succession and rocket into the IPL VII final, in Bangalore.

So incredible that Shah Rukh’s own Red Chillies Entertainment would probably be tempted to hire a scriptwriter and launch a film inspired by KKR’s clawback.

That KKR lost four matches on the trot before the sequence of wins underlines the enormity of what has been achieved.

The upswing almost coincided with the decision to promote Orange Cap-holder Robin Uthappa to open with Gambhir.

Often, one performance or one move changes the script dramatically. Elevating Uthappa and backing Yusuf Pathan to play with freedom (72 off 22 balls against the Sunrisers Hyderabad) are perfect fits.

Both Gambhir and Uthappa have, incidentally, made India comebacks during the day. A double delight for men wanting to and making a difference.

The opponent for Sunday won’t be known till Friday, but be it Kings XI Punjab (hammered in Qualifier 1, at the Eden) or the Chennai Super Kings, they’ll be more than wary.

Having won the fifth edition, KKR know what it takes to deliver on the biggest stage. While Kings XI have never made the final, the Super Kings have been champions twice.

Even if the batting didn’t exactly look intimidating, after the auction in February, nobody doubted that KKR possessed a most potent attack.

Morne Morkel and Umesh Yadav among quicks; Sunil Narine and Shakib-al Hasan among spinners. Not to forget Piyush Chawla, who has left an impression every time he’s been fielded.

In other words, quality variety to cripple/test the best.

Narine’s in his third season, but continues to mesmerise. To the extent that opponents keep his four overs out of the scoring equation.

That’s a huge compliment to the unassuming Trinidadian.

Actually, KKR haven’t depended either only on one batsman or one bowler, which has been a significant feature of their campaign.

The management has made smart moves off the field as well. Like securing the services of Mike Horn, inarguably the numero uno modern-day explorer.

Physical trainer Adrian le Roux made the suggestion, but credit to the KKR management for taking it on board.

Horn, it may be recalled, worked with Team India when we won the World Cup in 2011. Once the IPL gets over, he’ll be off to Brazil, motivating Germany.

Of late, Shah Rukh’s priority has been Happy New Year, set for a Diwali release. The rush to complete its shooting has kept him away from most of KKR’s matches, but he was at his “beloved” Eden.

Not from the first ball, but from pretty early in KKR’s innings.

The state’s chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, also put in an appearance. According to Shah Rukh’s posts on social media, he tucked into fish fry with “MamataDi”.

It couldn’t be confirmed if Shah Rukh hugged Mamata, but they’re known to admire each other.

Shah Rukh did, of course, hug Preity Zinta much to the joy of shutterbugs.

Consummate showman that he is, Shah Rukh completed a lap of honour, following the lead taken by Gambhir and his men.

Trust Shah Rukh and his Knights to party long into the night, before re-focusing on the one match which means the world now.

As Horn told The Telegraph: “The journey isn’t complete.”

i: As filmmaker Karan Johar turns a year older, he opened up about special friendships in his life in a recent interview with the Bombay Times.

Karan said, “Adi and Shah Rukh will always be weaknesses in my life because somewhere, I attribute my career to them and that is something I can never forget.”

The filmmaker says he hates it when he has to justify his relationship with his friend. “For me, he is beyond family, no matter where he is,” he said.

Karan can always fall back on his loyal friend he even narrated an incident, when Shah Rukh was there for him he said, “Recently, I had an emotional upheaval in my life a couple of months ago and it was just instinctive that I picked up the phone and called him. Normally, when you text him, he calls you back.”

“But once he told me, 'Karan, if you ever really need to reach me, I will pick up your phone.' And it's so strange that it has happened thrice in my life when I really needed to reach him and he picked it up.”

“It happened once when I lost my dad, once for a personal issue and recently, when I was extremely hurt due to a friend. I felt that I needed to connect with him on that. I picked up the phone, we chatted and he sorted my head out.”

He added, “With Shah Rukh and me, there will never be a phase that we will be apart. In my mind and heart, I know that the day we are back we have the same dynamic. Some relationships may create gaps in your life, but they never fade.”

“He is all heart. His biggest failing is his over sensitivity as sometimes, he does not want to hurt you. He will not say what he needs to as he is protecting your emotions.”

Rumour has it that the duo’s friendship turned sour, after Shah Rukh did not make an appearance on Karan’s talkshow, ‘Koffee with Karan’ for its fourth season.

Shah Rukh is currently busy with the upcoming film, ‘Happy New Year’, directed by Farah Khan. On Saturday, May 25 many familiar faces were seen at Karan’s residence bringing in his birthday.

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan is reliving his initial days in industry while shooting for his upcoming film 'Fan'.

Shah Rukh had made his television debut with 'Fauji' which was extensively shot in Delhi.

It's a kind of deja vu for the actor as he is heading towards Delhi to shoot for 'Fan' being produced by Yash Raj Films.

"Apart from the locations that director Maneesh Sharma has selected from across the globe, we will also be shooting a big chunk in Delhi," a YRF spokesperson said in a statement here.

SRK has shot in Delhi even after 'Fauji' for other projects, but in bits and parts. However, for 'Fan', he will again be shooting in and around Delhi for as long as two months.
'Fan' marks the coming together of Aditya Chopra, Maneesh Sharma and Shah Rukh.

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan has been ruling the silver screen for more than two decades and he says he enjoys being in the public eye and wants no privacy.

48-year-old Shah Rukh Khan has appeared in more than 50 Hindi films including several hits like 'Baazigar', 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge', 'Dil To Pagal Hai', 'Veer Zara' 'Swades' and 'Jab Tak Hain Jaan'.

"I am happy with my fame: I would miss leaving my house and not having people waiting for me, I would miss people waving to me, I am happy being loved. I want no privacy; I shamelessly want to be a star, I think it's the most beautiful thing to be," Shah Rukh said at an award ceremony organised by Forbes Middle East to acknowledge the Top Indian Leaders in the Arab World.

"I am so happy that people don't give me time to have lunch alone! I would rather have all this. Given the choice I would do it all over again," he added.

Shah Rukh took to the stage for a candid chat with the magazine's features editor, Joanne Al-Samarae. The actor said that he has earned much more money than he deserves.

"I came from a lower middle class family, and we had a lot of issues in terms of money, but I saw my parents work very hard to educate me so because of that, I have never been attached to material goods.

"I have the big houses, amazing cars, the best boxes in the stadiums; people really pamper me. But if I had none of that, and I just had my acting, then I would be happy," he said.

SRK Boulevard in RAK being re-launched

An artist impression of Shah Rukh Khan Boulevard unveiled in 2007.

The Dh8-billion Shah Rukh Khan (SRK) Boulevard in Ras Al Khaimah, which was put on hold in 2008, is being re-launched, industry sources told Emirates 24|7.

"The project is being re-launched. The concept of the project is being currently reworked… certain components will be expanded or removed," sources said.

An official statement of the launch will be released once the project design is completed.

Launched in 2007, Shah Rukh Khan Boulevard was being developed by TSA Group on Dana Island, which was to house several hotels, a shopping centre and commercial complexes spread across 6.3 million square metres.

Shah Rukh Khan confirmed to this website in 2010 that the development had been put on hold following the global financial crisis.

"To be honest, it kind of fell through at that point in time," he said, stating he was interested in the project.

Sources said that Los Angeles-based designer Tony Ashai of Ashai Design Corporation, who was previously designing the project, is still involved.

The entry to the project was to be through a glass gate followed by a boulevard with retail outlets and residential complexes, Ashai had said during the launch.

At the centre of the project, the boulevard was to have twin towers, where each floor will have one apartment with a single lift-taking residents to their homes.

The UAE's real estate market has rebounded with property prices across the emirate witnessing increase. Dubai is leading globally with prices having risen by over 30 per cent last year. The exuberance has led to several project being re-started in Dubai and other emirates as well.

Malad-resident Koral Dasgupta decodes consumer behaviour through the prism of actor Shah rukh Khan's super-stardom

A classroom full of MBA aspirants and a young teacher who is striving hard to hold their attention. And in comes Shahrukh Khan, flying to the rescue! No, this is not a cheesy scene that was chopped off from Ra.One but a real-life scenario (well, figuratively!) that prompted the birth of Power of a Common Man by Koral Dasgupta.

This is a flashback to a day about two years ago when Dasgupta was trying to engage her MBA students in a conversation about the success of brands such as Nestlé and Nirma, but instead she let the discussion take a cinematic turn. The next few hours were spent on decoding why the Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Don was remade with Sharukh Khan in it and the reasons behind casting Arjun Rampal as the modern-day Pran rather than the more obvious choices—Anupam Kher or Paresh Rawal. Flash-forward and you find Dasgupta's students eagerly waiting  to get their hands on this book, slated to be launched tomorrow.

The discussion with the young excited minds triggered a new thought  in Dasgupta, and the idea of a book about Shahrukh Khan's brand pull slowly took shape in her mind. Dasgupta says, "Even when I first started the series of discussions in class, I took down notes to prepare better for the next semester. I did not think my daily class-end scribbles would come handy for my book."

Why SRK?
On asking Dasgupta about her inspiration and choice of star, pat comes the reply, "I have been a Sharukh Khan loyalist for years now. Bunking school to catch several shows of Pardes was probably the simplest thing I did to enjoy seeing SRK on the big screen. I, once, jumped over the  hostel gate in Lucknow to dig out a life-sized poster of SRK that had been stuck on a wall. I had crushes on several actors during my growing up years, but none were able to outlive my fascination for SRK."

Channelising passion towards education
While Dasgupta was in the midst of writing this book, Chennai Express hit the big screens. While she herself caught the movie in the theatre, she was amazed that notwithstanding the terrible reviews it received, the movie ran to packed houses. Dasgupta says, "Several of my friends went to watch the movie in spite of the negative reviews  they read and the terrible feedback they got. It is this charisma that makes SRK such a larger than life personality."

Merging the man and the brand
Dasgupta points out, "Any story about SRK, in all these years, has never been about him alone. His wife, kids, and comfortable home—all are a part of his persona. That is how he has built it and maintains it. All of them have gradually become brands in themselves. It is this complete package that he brings to the brands he endorses." Dasgupta's authority about these facts comes from years of poring over newspaper articles that have been written about the Badshah of Bollywood. Despite getting rave reviews for his performance as a villain in 'Baazigar' and 'Darr', superstar Shah Rukh Khan is not in a mood to play a baddie again. Reports suggest that the actor was approached by Abbas Mustan to star in a negative role in their next action thriller 'Race 3'. However, the actor refused to be a part of the movie.
